Jack Burnell’s move into open water swimming came in 2013, having previously achieved fourth place in 1500m Free at the 2010 European Juniors and bronze in the same event at the British Champs two years later.
Having swum in only four open water races, Burnell joined the GBR open water team for the 2013 Barcelona World Champs, going on to finish 15th in the 10km – less than 20 seconds off the podium.
This year has seen Burnell step up further in the 10km events, finishing sixth in both the FINA World Cup in Portugal and the European Champs in Berlin, before winning the 10km race of the Madeira Island International Swim Marathon in Portugal.

In the Pool
Finest ever performance:
Top 16 at the World Champs 2013, Barcelona.
Floyd Mayweather, Muhammed Ali and my dad.
My aspirations are:
To win an Olympic gold at Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020.
I swim nine times a week for two hours, and average 70km a week.
Before leaving changing room to compete:
I put music on and visualise my race.
Out of the Pool
Tip for the top:
Have faith and a relentless drive to succeed every day, not just the days you feel like it. When someone says you can't do something, you should see that as a challenge not an obstacle.
Life after swimming:
Furthering my business career and growing my garment production company.
Would most like to meet:
Floyd Mayweather, Richard Branson and Alan Sugar.
I don’t really do relaxation. I always like to be doing things; playing other sports, watching my football team (Chelsea FC) or working on my garment production company.
Biggest influence on career:
I would say my dad because without him I would never have got involved in the sport, and he is the only one that believed I could do it when everyone said I couldn’t.
Boxing and football.
The Rolling Stones, Ed Sheeran and Calvin Harris - a bit of a mix!
I am a big lover of all food and always love to try new things but if you put a bar of chocolate in front of me it would not last long, that’s all I am saying!
I just love working on my garment production company, but when I am not working I love to watch football and boxing with friends and family. I also love a game of snooker with my dad, it always gets very competitive!
First swimming memory:
I was on holiday at a very young age, and my dad decided to try the sink or swim theory, literally, and dropped me in at the deep end of the hotel pool. I sank to the bottom but then popped up and started swimming. It all started from that high risk strategy, but it seems to have worked!
