Brittany Horton and Fraser Minnican both landed double gold on the opening day of the Burns Open Meet 2015 at Sheffield’s Ponds Forge.
City of Birmingham’s Horton secured top 10 finishes in all three backstroke distances at last year’s European Junior Championships, and asserted her dominance in Sheffield with a 2:14.70 effort to take the 200m Backstroke title and then 30.27 blast for the 50m Back crown later in the same session.
Loughborough University swimmer Minnican took the 400m Individual Medley title in 4:34.04 then added the 200m IM crown in the second session in 2:09.06.
Chloe Finch (City of Birmingham) was among the more impressive winners on the opening day as the 16-year old set a personal best 4:17.05 to take the 400m Freestyle title from City of Sheffield’s Jessie Westnidge, also in a PB time of 4:17.13.
Among the other gold medallists in the open age group were Loughborough University’s Commonwealth finalist James Wilby (200m Breast – 2:15.01), City of Sheffield’s Braxston Timm (100m Fly – 54.02) and Sheffield’s London 2012 Olympian Rebecca Turner (100m Free – 56.57).
Hatfield’s Nathan Hughes was the pick of the swimmers in the 14/15 Yrs Age Group as he romped to four golds, claiming the 400m IM (4:38.59), 200m Free (1:59.25) and 200m Breast (2:29.63) titles as well as setting a personal best 2:12.59 for victory in the 200m IM.
Meanwhile, in the girls 13 Yrs Age Group, City of Birmingham’s Caitlin Hubbard helped herself to a hat-trick of golds, slicing three seconds off her PB for victory in the 200m Back (2:23.38 PB) then adding further wins in the 50m Fly (29.94 PB) and 200m Fly (2:23.71).
