This weekend’s ASA South Zonal Championships will feature a number of 2014’s impressive youngsters going head-to-head at the iconic London Aquatics Centre.
There is a bumper field at the meet with so many entries that organisers had to raise the qualification standards!
The women’s freestyle events catch the eye with last year’s ASA National 17/18 Yrs 50m Freestyle silver and bronze medallists Isabella Hindley (Chelsea & Westminster) and Katie Latham (Thanet) both confirmed for the 50m, 100m and 200m Free as well as 50m Back and 100m Back with Hindley also chasing 200m IM glory.
Hindley’s teammate Georgina Boyle will also add some spice to the 200m Free, her time to win the 15/16 Yrs ASA National title last year being quicker than the winning time from the 17/18 Yrs age group.
Among the younger age groups are Hillingdon’s Brodie Judge, who won a hat-trick of golds in the 11/12 Yrs Age Group at last year’s ASA NAG Champs, as well as NAG medal winners Maisie Macartney (Thanet) and Sophie Fussell (Teddington).
Michael Gunning could be the headline act among the men’s entries, having qualified fastest for the 200m Butterfly final at last year’s British Swimming Championships before moving to train at London Aquatics Centre for this season.
His younger brother Luke (Beckenham) will take him on in the 100m and 200m Butterfly, while Bicester’s Kieran Bird will also be aiming to take a step up, having won the 200m Fly title in the 14 Yrs age group at last year’s NAG Champs.
Among the other younger entries looking to make an impression are Millfield’s Joshua Lawson, who set a British 13 Yrs Age Group record over 200m Breaststroke last year, and Max Jameson (Thanet), who was a comfortable champion in the 13 Yrs 200m Backstroke.
There are also a few Para-Swimmers to watch out for in London, not least three-time Paralympic medallist Susie Rodgers who goes in the 50, 100 and 400m Freestyle and the 50m Butterfly.
