The British U17 Men's and Women's teams suffered contrasting fortunes in their opening round of matches in their 2015 European Games qualifiers.
The women continued their fine recent form to record a 26-3 victory over Portugal and establish themselves firmly at the top of their qualification group.
Lucy Shaw, Grace Rowland and Izzy Dean all scored five for the Brits while Fleur Kennedy and Danica Brazier also contributed with hat-tricks.
The men emerged with credit from their opening match of the competition against group favourites Germany.
The Brits were trailing 7-4 at half-time and within touching distance before the Germans pulled clear in the third and fourth quarter to ultimately record a 19-7 win.
The men will hope to reclaim some ground in their two matches tomorrow against Latvia and Switzerland respectively.
The British women also play twice on Friday, taking on Czech Republic and France, both of whom they defeated in their warm-up tournament last week.
