World Cup bronze medallist Jack Laugher kickstarted his international season with a fourth place in the opening FINA Diving World Series of the year in Beijing.
The 20-year old qualified second from his 3m Springboard semi-final on 487.90 and improved on his score in the final, reaching 511.25.
But the Brit found three too good on the day as China's He Chong (551.50) and Cao Yuan (542.70) took the top two spots of the podium and Germany's European champion Patrick Hausding claimed bronze on 520.00.
Rebecca Gallantree was the only other Brit in action on day two in Beijing, finishing fourth in her 3m Springboard semi-final.
Having teamed up with Alicia Blagg for 3m Synchro bronze on the opening day, the 30-year old was unlucky not to reach the final in China, scoring 317.70 - a tally which would have qualified her in second place from the first semi-final but saw her miss out by one place in the second semi.
