Each day Commonwealth Champion Sarah Ruckwood (née Price) will pick her top swimmers in each age group from the ASA National Summer Champs at Ponds Forge in Sheffield.
Tia Ward for the 12/13yrs age group from City of Leeds for her really gutsy swim to take the gold medal, both in the heats and the final. She managed to race against the older ladies in the morning’s heats showing some real maturity, it’s great to see our younger swimmers coming through.
Looking forward to her in the Women’s 800m Freestyle tomorrow where she is once again posting times to rival girls three and four years older than her.
For the 14yrs age group it had to be Brodie Judge of Ealing. She was the fastest swimmer in the heats of the 200m Freestyle, then took the win with a new season best in the women’s 14yrs final, swimming 2:09.92.
For the 15yrs age group it was undoubtedly Samuel Peck of UAE Norwich. He shaved around 10 seconds off his PB in the 400m Individual Medley throughout the day to win a gold medal in the finals. Peck has set himself up nicely for the week and it’s great to see such talent coming through at the ASA National Summer Championships.
In the 16/17yrs age group, my pick would be Abigail Burr of Lincoln. She finished with two bronze medals, the first in the 200m Freestyle and the second in the 50m Butterfly. She showed great consistency and potential for the rest of the competition.
My final pick for the day is 16 year old S14 swimmer Joseph Seage of Rotherham Metro. He swam an amazing final for gold in the men’s MC 200m Freestyle, lowering his PB for the second time today by almost a full five seconds.
