London Otter's '01s team stormed to the girls' title at the ASA National Age Group Water Polo U15 Championships in Manchester.
Competing for the first time in the U15 age group, the Otter girls proved a class above on the day as they hammered home 83 goals in their six games, including 21 in their opening match against last year’s champions City of Manchester, and another 23 against Cheltenham in their second game.
Poppy Mayall – who played her part in helping the Otter U17 girls to the National title earlier this year – was unstoppable as she notched 17 goals including one in each half of their 7-3 final victory over City of Liverpool.
Otter captain Lily Turner, who was also part of the title winning U17 team earlier this season, was named MVP for the day and admitted the club’s victory in the older age group had given them plenty of confidence for their U15 age group debut.
“I couldn’t be happier for the team,” said Turner. “This is the first time we’ve competed here so it feels great to leave as national champions.
“Our older age group won the U17 Championships earlier this year and I think that really spurred us on as a team.”
Welsh Wanderers claimed the bronze medal with a 7-6 defeat of Rotherham Metro while Wanderers’ sharpshooter Nia Sanders was top goalscorer for the day, scoring 26 of her team’s 28 goals.
