Classy Daley Tops the 10m
In the Men’s 10m Platform, the final event of the 2016 British National Cup, World Champion Tom Daley pulled off a selection of classy dives, much to the enjoyment of the supporting crowd.
After a nervy start in which Daley missed his dive on the Inward 3½ Somersaults Tucked, Daley found his form, pulling in to the lead, finishing with impressive scores of 9.5 for his Back 3½ Somersaults Piked in the final round.
“Missing my inward 3 ½ Somersaults, one of my easiest dives, definitely made me fight for gold even more"
After winning the final with a total score of 545.80, the Dive London athlete said, “I’m pretty happy with how today went,” Daley said. “Missing my inward 3 ½ Somersaults, one of my easiest dives, definitely made me fight for gold even more, especially with Matty [Lee] diving fantastically.
“545 is a good score at the start of the season and that performance has really shown me that I can perform well no matter what."
City of Leeds youngster Matty Lee claimed silver in a score of 4671.00 after a string of excellent dives, whilst Daley’s new synchro partner, Plymouth Diving’s Dan Goodfellow took the bronze in 419.35 points.
In the Women’s 3m Springboard, City of Leeds took all three podium places, with World Champion Rebecca Gallantree taking gold and retaining her title with an impressive score of 326.05.
Gallantree’s experience shone through, with consistently strong dives throughout the prelims and the final. Gallantree’s Back 2½ Somersaults Piked stunned the sold-out crowd, and the judges too, who awarded her a score of 72.00 points, putting her ten points ahead at the start of the final round.
Gallantree was joined on the podium by club mates Alicia Blagg, who claimed the silver medal with a score of 321.00 points, with Katherine Torrance grabbing the bronze scoring 305.25.
“I was really happy with how I performed my fourth dive, a Back 2 ½ Somersaults."
Following the event, Gallantree commented, “I was really happy with how I performed my fourth dive, a Back 2 ½ Somersaults. I have been working really hard on it recently and as it is also one of mine and Alicia’s synchro dives, it gives me a lot of confidence for the synchro event.”
