The 2016 FINA Diving World Series is set to kick off this weekend, with the first leg being held in Beijing, China at the iconic 2008 Olympic venue, the Water Cube (pictured below).
Following a successful competition in Rio last month at the Diving World Cup, the GB diving team will be looking to continue to produce strong and consistent performances on the road to this summer’s Games.
Tom Daley will be returning to the stage of his first Olympic Games, where aged just 14 (pictured) he was the youngest of Team GB’s athletes across all sports, becoming a popular competitor with the spectators and picking up a huge local (and worldwide) fan-base.
Tom will be competing in both the 10m Individual and the 10m Synchro event this weekend, where with partner Daniel Goodfellow he will be aiming to polish and improve on their set of dives which earned them a World Cup bronze medal and a quota place for Rio just two weeks ago.
Couch and Toulson
Tonia Couch, the overall series winner in the 10m Platform event last year, will be looking to defend her title, whilst also competing in the 10m Synchro with promising youngster Lois Toulson. The pair competed together at January’s National Diving Cup in Southend, where they claimed silver, after beginning training as a synchro partnership at the end of 2015.
Couch and long-term diving partner Sarah Barrow picked up bronze in the 10m Synchro event at the Diving World Cup last month, securing an Olympic quota place for GB.
Laugher and Mears
Springboard specialists Jack Laugher and Chris Mears, bronze medallists at last year's World Championships in Kazan, will be representing GB in the 3m Synchro, with double Commonwealth Games Champion Laugher also competing in the 3m Individual competition.
Alexei Evangulov on the Series
“The Diving World Series 2016 is vital for competition exposure in an Olympic year ahead of the Games,” said Alexei Evangulov, British Swimming National Performance Director.
“To compete at this standard regularly allows the divers to be at their best when they need to be in the summer. This year is a big year for all of us and we grasp every opportunity to prepare.”
