British Gas Elite Junior Diving Championships
Plymouth was the venue for Bitain's top junior divers to compete in their first major test of the season.
On the opening day of the British Gas Elite Junior Diving Championships 2014, Sam Thornton (City of Leeds) and James Heatly (Edinburgh) topped the podium in the boys’ 14-18 years 3m Synchro, winning by an impressive 40 points. The stars of the lower age group (9-13yrs) were Alfie Bown (Star Diving Club) and Connor Van-Dal (Southend Diving).
In the girls’ competition, City of Sheffield pair Millie Fowler and Millie Haffety won the 14-18 years 3m Synchro, while the girls 9-13 years age group was won by Maria Papworth and Scarlett Mew of Crystal Palace.
1m Springboard gold was won by Plymouth’s Francesca Del Celo by nearly 50 points, with silver going to 3m Synchro champ Millie Fowler, and bronze to Lydia Rosenthall (Leeds) less than 3 points behind.
In the boys’ group A 3m platform Thornton struck gold again finishing just ahead of his synchro partner Heatly, while Ruby Power (City of Bradford) won the girls’ event.
Matthew Dixon (Plymouth Diving) earnt the top spot in the group B boys’ 1m Springboard, while City of Sheffield’s Holly May Prasanto fought off strong competition in the group C 3m to top the podium.
12-year-old Alfie Brown won his second gold of the event, with the top spot in the 9-13 yrs platform.
The third and final day of the competition gave Sam Thornton the chance to add a further springboard medal to his 2 golds already won. Having come top in the group A 1m Springboard prelim, he performed well to achieve his hat-trick, again beating his synchro partner Heatly, who finished in second.
Plymouth’s Shanice Lobb scored 392.45 in the Girls A Platform event to take gold. 16-year-old Lobb has competed in Group B at the past two European Junior Championships but with this win has shown her potential in the top age group.
Another Plymouth diver, 14-year-old Matthew Dixon, topped the Group B 3m Springboard podium, before going on to complete his third clean sweep in as many years, winning the Group B platform title by nearly 90 points. In 2012 and 2013 Dixon achieved the hat-trick in the individual Group C events.
City of Sheffield came out on top in the Group B Girls' 1m Springboard and Group C Boys’ 3m Springboard. Sarah Leach claimed the gold in a nail-biting final, while Owen Harrison won the 3m ahead of Southend's Connor Van-Dal and Star Diving’s Alfie Brown. The Girls' Group C Platform title went to Bradford Espirit's Holly Waxman.
Francesca Del Celo added to her 1m Springboard gold, by defending her Group A 3m Springboard title, ahead of City of Leeds’ Lydia Rosenthall who was competing in the top age group for the first time.
Kyle Kothari beat a trio of City of Sheffield divers to claim top honours in the Group A Platform final, while City of Sheffield came out on top in the Girls’ Group B 3m Springboard as Millie Haffety (gold) and Sarah Leach (silver) filled the top two spots on the podium.
Ollie Crompton (City of Leeds) and Scarlett Mew Jensen (Crystal Palace) claimed the final titles on offer with victories in the Group C 1m Springboard.
