LEN European Water Polo Championships, Hungary
The British Gas GBR Women’s Water Polo team faced Greece in their opening match at the European Champs.
The GBR team performed some world-class defence against a more experienced team, but in a close match, going into the final quarter 6-6, they fell behind losing to Greece 7-9. (1-2, 3-2, 2-2, 1-3)
In their second Group A match, GBR lost to a strong Dutch side with a score of 5-11, a score that does not reflect how well the team played. (1-2, 2-2, 1-3, 1-4)
The final group match, against host nation Hungary, was a must-win for GBR (to secure a semi-final playoff), and the team managed to keep possession and attack, recording the most possession of any team in the group games, however a frustrating match ended in a 5-16 heavy defeat.
One of the newest members of the team was Pippa Temple. 20, who scored her maiden goal for GBR going on to hit the back of the net a second time. (2-5, 1-3, 1-5, 1-3)
The three defeats in Group A left GBR to play France in the seventh place play-off match. Playing in torrential rain, GBR won the second quarter and drew in the final but France’s goalscoring secured them a 5-8 win, and the 7th place spot.
Tournament GBR goalscorers: Ciara Gibson-Byrne (10), Angie Winstanley-Smith (3), Hazel Musgrove (2), Pippa Temple (2), Chloe Wilcox (2), Fran Clayton, Aine Hoy, Claire Nixon.
Top goalscorer was Ciara Gibson-Byrne.
