Cheltenham kicked off the defence of their British Water Polo Championship title with a nine-goal defeat of Lancaster in their first qualification game of 2015.
The men’s competition is taking place in a home and away leg basis for the first time with Cheltenham hosting a home water polo match for the first time in 20 years.
And the defending champions went to the top of the Group B qualification table with a 24-15 victory.
City of Manchester – who lost out to Cheltenham in a penalty shoot out in last year’s final – also started their campaign with three points, claiming an 8-4 win at home to Portobello.
But it was 2013 champions Bristol Central who shot to the top of Group A with a 17-3 defeat of Polytechnic at Hengrove Park.
City of Manchester 24 - 15 Portobello
Bristol Central 17 - 3 Polytechnic
Cheltenham 24 - 15 Lancaster
