Athletes from the England Water Polo Talent Programme have been selected to represent Team GB this summer at the inaugural European Games in Baku, Azerbaijan
The Water Polo competition will take place from the 12-21 June in a temporary but dedicated Water Polo arena created as part of the European Games Park.
The women’s competition will be a 12-team tournament that will see British athletes take on Greece, Netherlands, Hungary, Germany and Israel in Group A.
"We had two tough matches against the Czech Republic and France, but our wins against Portugal and Switzerland were strong. Since the qualifiers we have spent the last month working on tactics and preparing to face even tougher competition in Baku.
"We’ve all worked so hard to get to Baku and we are all really looking forward to competing and showing what we can do as a team," - Mhairi Nurthen
“The European Games will be a great opportunity for the athletes to take part in a multi-sport competition. We’re in a tough group with teams that train twice a day, but the athletes have been training hard and they are very determined to do well.”
London Otter athlete Mhairi Nurthen added: “The qualifiers for the European Games were so much fun. The atmosphere was amazing and it was great to compete against the other teams and see how they play. We’ve all worked so hard to get to Baku and we are all really looking forward to competing and showing what we can do as a team.”
