Harriet Cooper and Kathleen Dawson both won gold as GB’s top juniors took the opening night of the Ontario Junior International by storm.
The young British squad landed 10 medals on day one of the junior short course meet in Toronto with Craig McLean also winning two individual medals.
City of Derby swimmer Cooper kicked off the first finals session in perfect style, shooting to the top of this season’s British rankings with a PB 1:56.26 to take the 200m Freestyle title.
Chelsea & Westminster’s Georgina Boyle became the second fastest British 17-year old in history with a PB 1:57.78 for silver in the same final while 15-year old Team Ipswich swimmer Becky Sherwin was eighth in 2:01.44.
Another 15-year old, Taz Pugh, was in record-breaking form as she completed her set of British Junior short course butterfly records.
Having already set British Junior records in the 50m and 200m Fly this season, the Ellesmere College Titans swimmer shaved more than a second off her PB to take 100m Fly bronze in 58.90.
Plymouth Leander’s 16-year old Laura Stephens also dived under the minute marker for the first time in her career as she took silver in 58.43.
McLean’s two medals came in the 200m Freestyle and 50m Backstroke, with silver in the former in 1:46.97 and bronze for the sprint event in 25.72 after a PB 25.71 in the heats.
Warrington Warriors swimmer Dawson was also in action in the 50m Back, winning gold with a new Scottish record.
The 18-year old became just the fourth British swimmer in history to duck under 27 seconds for 50m Back in the short course pool, taking the title with a 26.76 effort in the final after a 26.90 heat swim.
University of Bath’s Joe Hulme dropped nearly 10 seconds from his 400m Individual Medley PB as he took silver in 4:18.68 while Charlie Attwood and Edward Baxter won 100m Breaststroke silver and bronze respectively.
Taunton Deane’s Attwood touched second in the final in 1:00.69 after a PB 1:00.63 in the heats while Cockermouth swimmer Baxter saved his best for the final with a PB 1:01.49 effort.
